So small and yet so "great"...
The traditional village Pefki is located 7 km north of the village Makrigialos and 25 km. east of Ierapetra city, on the south coast of the Libyan Sea, in the county of Lasithi, in east Crete.
Walking in the narrow streets of the village, one can smell the traditional foods from the housewives’ “tsikalia” (casseroles), meet villagers who painstakingly produce every day local Cretan products such as olive oil, honey, raki, etc., feel their warm and kind-hearted hospitality and gaze at the natural beauties surrounding it..
Things to do
There are unique hiking trails around village Pefkoi.
The Pefki Gorge (E4) begins from the village and ends at the more modern village of Makrigialos. Meanwhile, in the village there’s a Folk Art Museum, where Mrs. Urania will show you around in her own unique way. The caves Aploustres and Vreiko surround the village. The area is a wildlife sanctuary. There are also several beaches south of the village and they are usually adorned with the blue flag: beaches with sand, stone, pebbles or clay, organized or secluded, are located in the area and are easily accessible.
Pefki village counts 85 inhabitants, many of whom come from various European countries. In Pefkoi one can find peace and relaxation, a getaway from the stressful everyday life of the big cities. There are only 2 traditional cafes, where visitors can taste the traditional cuisine and the local delicacies. During the summer months you will be able to attend the bees harvesting and taste the honey straight from the "source".
The village’s economy is predominantly agricultural. The production of olive oil, honey, wine and Raki is the main source of income for the village. During each season the visitor can attend the rural activities of the residents, but also participate in them. In recent years, the cultivation of aloe, a plant well-known for its beneficial properties, is developed.

Located 6 kilometers from the village of Pefkoi, there is the village of Makrigialos. It is a seaside resort with clean beaches and a picturesque harbor, were you can find many cafes, bars and restaurants.
In Makrigialos there are organized sandy beaches, whereas to the east you will find many beaches, capable of satisfying every visitor. In the village of Makrigialos, there are the ruins of a Roman villa of the 4th century AD.
East of Pefki is the village Zakros, which was a major administrative center during the Minoan era. The Palace of Zakros is an important archaeological site, and a unique phenomenon takes place there: in the lakes of the site (and only in them) there live turtles, which scientists believe to originate from the Minoan era. The famous Gorge of the Dead, which was a Minoan cemetery leads to Kato Zakros.
North of Pefkoi, within 31km, there is Sitia. It is a modern city, built amphitheatrically, worth of a visit especially in the evening, in order to enjoy the famous “rakadika” (raki taverns). At the exit of the city there is the Archaeological Museum, with particularly important exhibits from the Minoan era.
At the top of the town is the Fort Kazarma, where during the summer months various cultural events are organized. The A Primary School of the city, build during the early 20th century, is considered to be a modern Monument.
East of Sitia, you can visit the unique palm beach of Vai and the nearby Moni Toplou (Toplou monastery), dating back to the 15th century. Moni Toplou owns an important collection of Byzantine icons, books, engravings and religious and historical relics.
